4 Questions Every Parent Should Ask When Looking For A Dance School

1. What is the instructors’ training? Are the instructors at the school former professional dancers themselves? College degrees in dance are fine but diplomas don’t necessarily mean the instructor has had the practical experience to pass on. Are the instructors experienced teachers?

The instructors and the directors at Princeton Dance and Theater Studio have performed in professional companies, many as principal dancers. Many have reached the top levels of their profession and have a proven track record of effectively passing on their knowledge. Many of their students have gone on to professional careers of their own. Recreational dancers, who do not have professional aspirations, receive the same stellar instruction that is beneficial to them in all walks of life.

2. Does the school participate in dance competitions and/or recitals? If it does, do the students practice their dances (sometimes called “routines”) during their regularly scheduled class time?

While Princeton Dance and Theater Studio offers wonderful and important performing opportunities to all of our students, none of which are “competition team” type performances, most rehearsals and all ballet rehearsals take place outside of classroom time. Whether a student who loves to dance is a recreational dancer or has professional aspirations, he or she should always be learning new steps while perfecting form and basic technique. Be aware that if rehearsals are going on in the classroom, less time will be spent focused on the skills that are adaptable to any dance.

3. What Is the school’s environment like? Too serious and strict or is it too unstructured and not disciplined enough?

At Princeton Dance and Theater Studio, we believe that a student can receive stellar training and still have fun! Since the student is receiving authentic dance and theater training and is constantly being challenged, confidence is enhanced and is carried over to other areas of his or her life.

4. Does the school offer state of the art flooring and facilities?

All three studios at Princeton Dance and Theater Studio have floors that are “sprung”, which significantly cuts down on impact injuries. They are covered with vinyl which significantly reduces falls due to slipping. The studios offer large viewing windows so that parents may, at any time, watch their child’s progress. The windows also allow the lesser skilled and younger students the opportunity to watch the more advanced students. Many of our ballet classes offer live piano accompaniment.
